Maritime Hydrographic Directorate

Institutional role

The Maritime Hydrographic Directorate carries out specialised activities in the fields of maritime hydrographic information, marine cartography, navigation, marine geodesy, oceanography, and hydrometeorological support for the Naval Forces and for authorised beneficiaries.

Main activities

• managing the national system of maritime hydrographic information;
• creating, managing and updating the data and information holdings on cartography, marine geodesy and maritime navigation;
• bathymetric surveying of the sea;
• geodetic and other surveys of features in the coastal zone, at sea, on the seabed and in the underwater zone;
• marine geophysics and oceanography activities in the area relevant to hydrography;
• representing Romania in relations with relevant international organisations in the fields of hydrography and maritime signalling;
• warning, alerting and informing on hazardous weather phenomena, for the planning and conduct of Naval Forces activities;
• compensating navigation equipment for Naval Forces vessels and, upon request, for civilian vessels;
• producing official maritime navigational charts, in paper and electronic format, for Romania's exclusive economic zone;
• producing nautical publications, notices to mariners and official radio navigational warnings for Romania's exclusive economic zone;
• preparing and providing expert commissions with technical calculations, charts, sketches and alternative delimitations of international maritime limits and boundaries;
• providing hydrographic, navigational, geographic and hydrometeorological support to the Naval Forces;
• selling official Romanian nautical charts and publications;
• maintaining the maritime signalling system along the Romanian coast;
• research and development activities in natural sciences and engineering, including basic research, applied research and experimental development.
