About the laboratory
The Oceanography Research Laboratory is the specialised structure providing oceanographic support to the Naval Forces.
Laboratory responsibilities
- Oceanographic and geophysical research of the coastal and offshore areas of the sea, research of the seabed relief and soil, in the parts relevant to navigation, hydrography and SMFN actions, carried out in Romania's area of responsibility in the Black Sea.
- Updating and managing the maritime oceanographic database based on information obtained from specific activities or from other national civilian or military institutions/organisations with which it cooperates.
- Providing oceanographic support to the Naval Forces in peacetime and wartime.
- Implementing IHO standards for oceanographic research, surveys in deep-water areas, and methods for eliminating unreliable data.
- Drafting normative acts and documentation for the oceanographic support of the Naval Forces.
- Developing modernisation projects and procurement strategies for specific equipment and instruments.
- Coordinating the technical support activity with oceanographic equipment and instruments for Naval Forces ships and units.
- Providing technical support for issuing permits for oceanographic activities carried out by other Romanian or foreign public or private institutions, bodies or organisations whose statutes provide for such specific activities, in accordance with the Hydrography Law.
- Organising and coordinating oceanographic research activities and missions carried out with the hydrographic survey ship "Cpt cdor A. Cătuneanu" and the hydrographic boats.
- Providing consultancy and specialist assistance to Naval Forces personnel on board who work with specific oceanographic equipment, and their periodic training.
- Cooperating with military (NATO working groups) or civilian specialist institutions and structures in the country and abroad in the field of oceanography.
